Disrespect to citizens
published: Sunday | January 14, 2007

Desmond McKenzie

The Editor, Sir:

Your articles regarding the deplorable state of some, or most, of our national sites and parks are well in order, and speaks volumes to the pathetic treatment of the infrastructure of the country, and indeed, the disrespect for us the citizenry by both local and central government.

Whereas I concur that the general public must share the blame for the shameful state of these sites, and the general surroundings, I strongly believe that local and central government must bear the brunt of the reprimand for the current conditions as they must take the lead in ensuring that consistent maintenance is effected to areas under the supervision of the various ministries and not just for show on special occasions such as the ICC World Cup Cricket Tournament or the visit of a foreign official.

It is not acceptable that local government controlled by JLP councillors just sit and blame central government. When they campaigned for our votes, they should have known that if successful, they would be required to perform with a PNP government in control. They must be assertive, use their initiative and get the job done by any 'legal and moral means necessary'.

Desmond McKenzie in my view has tried, and is trying to make a difference in the KSAC, but much, much more needs to be done across the country.

There seems to be a numbness in feelings that has gripped both government personnel and the general public, regarding certain matters of national pride and priority. We see demonstrations only at the beginning of school terms when, surprised at the fact that schools are not prepared for reopening, yet, there are little or no proactive measures to deal with the problem during the holiday period.

How casually most of us respond to the daily killings of our brothers and sisters. Where is the outrage among our people and our leaders? I agree and support the argument that we waste time in hosting prayer breakfasts, if we just sit and wait for divine intervention after our prayers have ended.

I am, etc.,

JOHN LUCAS
