In the aftermath of Saturday's massive protest by squatters objecting to their removal from lands belonging to Keith Russel, the squatters yesterday rejected an offer by Russell to relocate them to other parts of lands he owns in the Duncans area of Trelawny.

Their rejection followed a meeting yesterday with the political directorate, including People's National Party Member of Parlia-ment Dr. Patrick Harris and Jamaica Labour Party caretaker and candidate Dennis Meadows.

The reasons given for the rejection are that the squatters are still holding on to the notion that the land is not owned by Russell and are also fearful that they may not get security of tenure. Additionally, they are concerned that they may be evicted in the future. They claim that they are also not sure of the amenities and security of the area.

The intervention of Dr. Patrick Harris however may result in an amicable settlement as he is exploring the possibility of relocating the squatters to Crown lands. He however warned that this may come at a cost.

The conflict, now reportedly in its 15th year, is fuelled by allegations that Russell encouraged the squatters to occupy the land when he was MP. Russell has denied the allegations.
