The Editor, Sir:
I must use this medium to express thanks to those persons responsible for preserving the Jamaican culture through the years. On Friday night, I joined many theatre personnel and lovers of the arts to send home one of our cultural icons extraordinaire, Charles Hyatt, and was very pleased with the manner in which his nine-night was kept.
The ritual was led by an energetic and comic Richard Darby from the Manchioneal Cultural group. He was assisted by the St. Ann Senior Citizens' Group and members from his own community in Portland. Indeed, all got a taste of Africa. We saw Tambo, Gere, Ettu, Kumina and Dinki-Mini; and though I am a fan of the folklore, I heard some songs that I really have never heard before.
I was especially pleased with the support for the theatre community, who not only gave cameo appearances but mingled and danced until even their socks were wet. Kudos must be extended to Karl Heart and his team from the Pantry Caterers, who stood over the fire and prepared real country nine-night 'chocolate tea', fritters and chicken (Kingston people nine-night food). It was a good home-going celebration.
The night was sealed with a blessing from the Lord at approximately 2:00 a.m. with showers. Charlie went home in fine style; indeed it was Charlie's time.
I am, etc.,
NICOLE WILLIAMS
