CASTRIES, St. Lucia (CMC):
A telling all-round performance by Man of the Match David Bernard pushed Jamaica to a five-wicket victory over the Windward Islands in their KFC Cup second round match at the Beausejour Cricket Ground here yesterday.
Bernard picked up three for 29 with his medium pace as the Windwards were bowled out for 161 in 43.2 overs, then he made a crucial 23 as Jamaica coasted to 165 for five in 47.4 overs to earn their second consecutive victory in the competition.
The Jamaican captain, Wavell Hinds, had praise for his bowlers.
"The bowlers got the ball in the right areas and the Windwards were set back early with us getting two early wickets," said Hinds.
Supporting Bernard well were Lawson, with three for 38 in 10 overs, and Miller also bowling his full quota of overs claiming two for 29.
When Jamaica replied, they posted 26 for the first wicket with Parchment going leg before to left-arm pacer Butler for six.
Danza Hyatt then added 38 with Lorenzo Ingram for the second wicket but both went in the space of three runs - Hyatt caught by Etienne off leg-spinner Lewis for 21 and Ingram caught by Andre Fletcher behind the stumps for 19.
Fletcher kept the entire innings, standing in for regular wicket-keeper Murray who was resting a bruised finger he suffered while batting.
The Jamaicans were in a bit of bother when their captain Wavell Hinds was caught by Campbell on the mid-wicket boundary after contributing 11.
The 25-year-old Bernard, who played one Test and four One-Day International (ODI) matches for West Indies in 2003, then joined Lambert and figured in their crucial fifth-wicket partnership of 72 that steadied the Jamaica innings. Bernard was dismissed before the target was achieved, leg before to a Lewis googly.
The solid Lambert was left on 48 not out with eight fours off 89 balls and extras contributed a healthy 32, including 13 wides and 11 no balls.
Lewis bagged three for 32 to be the chief wicket taker for the Windwards.
"On this good batting track we needed to get 200-plus to win this match. They bowled well and pressed us back early in our innings," Windwards captain Rawl Lewis said.
Added Lewis: "They have a good batting line-up and paced their innings well. With an extra 30 runs we probably would have had a chance."
