Granville make desired start
published: Friday | January 19, 2007

REID

Western Bureau:

Granville FC made it two wins from two starts in Zone B of the 2006-07 Captain's Bakery Western Super Football League on Tuesday afternoon when a second half penalty by veteran striker Rodney Hines gave them a 1-0 win over Grange Hill at the Belle Isle Community Centre, Westmoreland.

"This is the type of start we had been hoping for at the start of the season," said Granville's female coach, Mrs. Tracy Reid. "It is also important that you start well in a competition like this and two wins from two starts is exactly what we had in mind."

In their opening game against Clarkes' Town on their home turf at the Sam Sharpe Teachers' College, the Granville team was in awesome form, handing the Trelawny team a 4-1 defeat. David Gillard (2), Oniel Pringle and Odane Snow were the goalscorers in that game.

"We are back to full strength for the first time in a few seasons because we had a few players who were out on loan to other teams and they are now back in the camp," said Mrs. Reid. "We have set our sights on winning the competition this year and we are throwing everything in our effort."

Champions Negril FC, which started their campaign in Zone A of the 12-team competition with a 1-0 win over Mount Salem, failed in their bid for a second consecutive win in their game on Tuesday after they were held to a 2-2 draw by last year's beaten semi-finalists Sandy Bay. Sandy Bay started their campaign last Saturday with a 1-0 win over newcomers Black Diamonds.

Newcomers

In the second of the Zone B games played on Tuesday, newcomers Holland FC of Trelawny, which also kicked off their campaign last Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Montpelier, notched their first victory at the Super League level, tagging parish neighbours Clarkes' Town FC 3-1 in their game at Clarke's Town.

Black Diamond, one of three St. James teams in the competition, also tasted victory for the first time on Tuesday, clipping the seasoned Orange Hill 1-0 in their Zone A game in Orange Hill. Orange Hill had 1-1 draw against Bamboo in their first round encounter.

The competition, sponsored to the tune of J$1.1 million, has the teams zoned as follows:

Zone A: Negril FC (Westmore-land), Sandy Bay (Hanover), Orange Hill (Westmoreland), Mount Salem (St. James), Black Diamond (St. James) and Bamboo (Hanover).

Zone B: Montpelier (Hanover), Granville (St. James), Clarkes' Town (Trelawny), Salt Spring (St. James), Grange Hill (Westmoreland) and Holland (Trelawny).
