Glasgow double lifts T&T to semi-finals
published: Friday | January 19, 2007

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

Trinidad and Tobago ham-mered Haiti to reach the semi-finals, while Barbados bowed out with a loss to Martinique, in the Digicel Caribbean Cup Wednesday night.

The hosts easily outplayed Haiti to come away with a 3-1 victory, while Barbados suffered a 3-2 defeat to end their campaign winless.

Claimed top spot

Playing in the feature match of the night in the Sedley Joseph group, T&T ensured they claimed top spot with a clinical display.

Gary Glasgow hit a brace and Kerwyn Jemmott added another for the hosts, while Haiti got their solitary strike from substitute Burnel Fucien.

It was Jemmott who opened the scoring after 13 minutes when his free kick from 30-yards out proved too much for Haiti's goalkeeper Normil Yvesner.

Eight minutes later, Darryl Roberts almost doubled Trinidad & Tobago's lead, but he scuppered his chance while Haiti too almost got on the scoresheet moments later but Germain Peter sent his shot wide.

Glasgow then missed another glorious opportunity to put T&T ahead. On 37 minutes, Jemmott collected the ball mid pitch, played on to Darryl Roberts who back flicked a pass to Glasgow. With a clear shot on goal from 12 yards out, the striker blasted the ball over the uprights.

Substitutions

Down 1-0 at half-time, Haiti rebounded after the interval. Fucien, one of two substitutions made at the start of the half, brought Haiti level when he ran onto a through ball to beat custodian Jan Williams, two minutes after coming off the bench in the 55th minute.

Glasgow then scored the first of his goals two minutes later to put T&T back in front when he pounced on a loose ball following a corner from substitute Kwame Wiltshire.

With five minutes left, T&T moved ahead 3-1 when he capitalised on an errant back pass from a Haitian defender, beat the advancing keeper, rounded the last defender before curling the ball into the back of the nets.

Earlier, Martinique got goals from Patrick Percin, Johan Clementia and Gael Germany to put Barbados out of the running in the competition.

Found target

For Barbados, Neil Harvey and Louis Soares found the target.

Percin opened the scoring after nine minutes when he latched on to a long clearance from keeper Oliver Sylvestre to beat Barbadian custodian Adrian Chase.

Harvey answered for Barbados in the 29th minute with a superb volley from a Gregory Goodridge cross from the left, but Martinique were back in front a minute later when Clementia banged home a Percin pass.

Germany gave the French side their third goal three minutes later and even though Soares brought Barbados back into contention two minutes before the break, the second half proved unfruitful for both teams and the result stood at the final whistle.
