Movies for the family - Will, Jaden and Dakota waiting
published: Saturday | January 20, 2007

Shelly-Ann Thompson, Freelance Writer

Fern (left, Dakota Fanning) gives Wilbur (voiced by Dominic Scott Kay) a bath in a scene from 'Charlotte's Web'.

The entertainment pace of January is very slow. This, of course, has filtered down to family-oriented events.

Yet, the movie theatres are bubbling with films for the entire family.

Stars such as the acclaimed Will Smith and his adorable son, Jaden, the charming Dakota Fanning, the chic Meagan Good, recent Golden Globe awardee Jennifer Hudson and the fabulous Beyoncé Knowles are at the cinemas.

Adults, this is one of the most perfect theatre-going opportunities to treat your children, nieces and nephews to a day at the movies.

Stomp The Yard - PG-13

Cast: Columbus Short, Meagan Good, Laz Alonso and others.

An expert street dancer, Columbus Short heads to Georgia in the United States to attend college. But there's this step-dancing competition that gets in the way of his studies and his love life. Watch to find out which road the college dancer will choose.

Pursuit of Happyness - PG-13

Cast: Will Smith, Thandy Newton, Jaden Smith and others.

Based on the life of Chris Gardner, a self-made millionaire, who finds himself jobless and homeless at age 30, living in a San Francisco train station with his infant son. Determined to beat the odds, he finds work as a trainee at a brokerage and climbs the corporate ladder, eventually becoming partner and owner of his own Chicago-based firm.

Dreamgirls - Rated U

Cast: Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé Knowles, Eddie Murphy and others.

Based on the Tony-winning Broadway musical, this 1960s-era story follows three young singers - Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose) - as they try to cross over to the pop charts.

Charlotte's Web - Rated U

Cast: Dakota Fanning, Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey and others.

Fern (Dakota Fanning) can see that Wilbur is a special animal as she raises him, the runt of the litter, into a terrific pig. As Wilbur moves into a new barn, he begins a second friendship with the most unlikely of creatures, a spider named Charlotte, and their bond inspires the animals around them to come together as a family

Happy Feet - Rated U

Cast: Nicole Kidman, Elijah Wood, Robin Williams and others.

In the great nation of Emperor Penguins in Antarctica, you are nobody unless you can sing, which is bad news for Mumble (Elijah Wood), who is the worst singer in the world. But he sure can tap dance. Mumble's mom, Norma Jean (Nicole Kidman), thinks his dancing is cute, but his dad, Memphis (Hugh Jackman), says it "just ain't penguin." Besides, they both know that, without a 'heartsong', Mumble may never find true love.
