Police seek more money for World Cup
published: Saturday | January 20, 2007

Robert Royer, Gleaner Writer

The Executive of the Jamaica Police Federation will be meeting with National Security Minister Dr. Peter Phillips next month to seek additional remuneration for members of the force working during Cricket World Cup 2007.

General secretary of the federation, Corporal Hartley Stewart, said yesterday that the objective of the February 7 meeting would be to seek equity with other police forces in the Caribbean.

Other islands have settled

"The governments of the other Caribbean islands have settled the question of remuneration with their police force and they will be paid an additional amount," Corporal Stewart said.

He added: "In international security, once an event is being staged for commercial purposes, the organisers are responsible for providing additional remuneration for police personnel."

Corporal Stewart further explained that the additional remuneration being sought for police working at Cricket World Cup 2007 relates to those working hours outside their normal shifts.

He said a meeting is also scheduled with the security committee for Cricket World Cup 2007 to discuss the matter.
