Westwood in Stewart Town, Trelawny, begins a year-long celebration of its 125th anniversary as a high school for girls with a service of thanksgiving tomorrow. The service will be held in the school's auditorium starting at 10:00 a.m. as the first of its activities during the year to mark the milestone.
These activities include a pilgrimage to Manchester Pen, about one mile from Stewart Town, where the school began in January 1882 in a house with six girls and a teacher, Annie Fray.
In 1891, the school was moved to its present site. Today, Westwood is a grant-aided school managed by a board of trustees and has a
student population of 745 and
academic staff complement of 33.
Other activities to mark the
celebration include an open day, barbecue and awards dinner, the dates of which will be announced in due course.
