With the launch of Digicel's wireless broadband services expected in a few months, Cable & Wireless Jamaica is trying to pre-empt the competition by expanding its free wireless services.

The former monopoly telecommunications provider said Friday it was "moving aggressively" to tie up the hospitality sector by rolling out WiFi wireless in-room services and accelerating the number of hot spots in hotels and guest rooms in the next few weeks.

The move fits neatly into the local telecom's plan to maintain a strong foothold in Internet services business ahead of newcomers Flow, which started rolling out service to residential services last August, and Digicel, which plans on launching its wireless Internet broadband services by mid-2007.

C&WJ, since 2005, has been focusing on expanding its Internet services, and up to September 30, had reported a 180 per cent increase in its ADSL subscriber base over 2005.

Currently, C&WJ offers residential wireless services only in the hills above Montego Bay and is considering where to offer similar services in Kingston, apart from its existing fixed-line broadband services.

The Internet service provider (ISP) said it would not charge hotels for installation but would work out revenue-sharing agreements with each property.

"Use of WiFi technology in the delivery of these services allows for fast installation as it eliminates the need for cabling and elaborate networking of equipment," said the statement from C&WJ.

Users will be able to pay by pre-paid or credit card or have it included in their room charge.
