Ministry of Health urges precautions against malaria
published: Sunday | January 21, 2007

With 62 malaria cases reported since the start of the year the Ministry of Health is urging the public to take necessary precautions against infection and possible reinfection.

The ministry reminded yesterday that the ban on mass gatherings remained in the affected areas of Denham Town, Tivoli Gardens, Trench Town, Delacree Park, Union Gardens and Greenwich Town.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sheila Campbell-Forrester also warned that successfully treated persons could still become reinfected if bitten by an infected anopheles mosquito.

"Until we have no further cases, we are still experiencing an outbreak and must take the necessary preventative and control steps," she said.

Hagley Park, Maxfield Park, Denham Town, Comprehensive and Kiwanis Maternity medical centres will remain open this weekend to treat those with fever.
