MegaMart goes retro
published: Sunday | January 21, 2007

Daviot Kelly, Staff Reporter

President and CEO of MegaMart Gassan Azan (left) chats with Chris Zacca, president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica.

The afros, platform shoes and loud colours were taken out of the closet, dusted off and donned.

MegaMart staff brought out the retro style at their staff dinner party held last Tuesday at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club.

"When MegaMart sets out to do something, we do it well. I didn't even recognise some of the staff," said an amused CEO Gassan Azan. He commended his staff on a successful 2006 and expressed enthusiasm for a better 2007. He pointed everyone toward three major events about to take place this year; the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, a general election and the opening of MegaMart's third store in Montego Bay.

But a good retro party has very little to do with speeches and more to do with great music and some dancing. The music was certainly present day and more than once the the hands went up as the 'selecta' spun more hits.

excellent routine

Comedic duo Apache Chief and Sarge did an excellent routine which had everyone in stitches. They integrated the staff into their routine and the guests didn't mind being the butt of a few jokes. The entertainers then showed their other talents by serenading a few of the women with some more than creditable vocal work. They weren't finished as they brought the house down with their impersonations. Zebra, and even Buju Banton were all copied to perfection. They ended their stint with a combination of songs from Mavado and Bounty Killer (with Sarge bearing a striking resemblance to The Warlord).

The crowd was still in a frenzy when at around 11:30 p.m., the screams really went sky-high when the boys of One Third strolled in. In their usual style, they thrilled the audience with their tunes, reminding everyone there is still more to come from the trio. The party continued into the Wednesday morning hours.
