Supporting Air Jamaica
published: Tuesday | January 23, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am using this forum to voice my support for the Government's continued financial input in Air Jamaica. I would venture to ask those industry geniuses who continue to voice the demise of our national airline and wonder what are their plans for the replacement of Air Jamaica? I would also like to ask them if the primary function of Air Jamaica is to make a profit or to ensure the movement of visitors both to and from our island?

Air Jamaica plays a vital role in the major sources of our market base and is constantly under-priced by certain low budget airlines. We are reminded by the failure of these airlines to guarantee seats to Jamaica, and can stop their flights should there be a major decline in the market. Who would be able to take up the slack?

They begrudge the subsidy of US$30 million but would not worry if taxpayers footed their advertisement bill.

Market the airline

What needs to be done is that part of this subsidy should be used to market Air Jamaica and Jamaica, in conjunction with funds made available from the Tourist Board.

Air Jamaica should also try and play the low 'game' and offer the fare structure used by one particular carrier which allows individuals to purchase each leg of their flight separately.

Please be reminded that the jobs of the hardworking staff of Air Jamaica would be affected primarily and the jobs of many support staff in the industry would also be affected.

In closing let these prophets of 'Air Jamaica doom' remember that their livelihood could also be affected by the death of our national airline. There is a cost for 'national pride' and I love those colours and the familiar faces.

I am, etc.,
