published: Thursday | January 25, 2007

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

The police in Ewarton, St. Catherine, yesterday seized ganja weighing more than 300 lb during a morning raid in the Ewarton area of the parish. They are also searching for a group of men who they said eluded them during the operation.

According to Detective Sergeant Paul Campbell, about 1:30 a.m., police personnel from the Ewarton station proceeded to the Ewarton main road where a house was searched. On the arrival of the lawmen, several occupants ran and made their escape. After a search, the contraband was found in a room in several packages.

Preparing warrants

According to Mr. Campbell, some of the men are known and the police will be preparing warrants for their arrest. He said that the drugs seized has put a dent in the illicit drug running in the area and that the police will be continuing its drive to rid the community of drug peddlers.

The value of the drugs has been placed at J$15 million.
