Portmore United retained their St. Catherine Cooperative Credit Union/-Happy Sutherland Knock-Out crown with a 2-0 triumph over Major League Club Bodles F.C. at the Spanish Town Prison Oval on Thursday.
Goals by Kevin Deerr (41st minute penalty), and Wolry Wolfe (74th minute) led the way for the Portmore-based club.
Paul Young, coach of Portmore United thought his team did enough to win.
"We didn't play our best game - we didn't dominate the game but we did enough to win," Coach Young said.
Bodles F.C. placed Portmore under pressure in the first half, but could not score, as Portmore goalkeeper Sheldon Brown kept his team in the contest with a few fine saves.
Portmore United were awarded a penalty in the 41st minute when Kevin Deerr was brought down by Bodles goalkeeper Jeffrey Soares. Referee Dave Peterkin pointed to the spot and issued a yellow card to Soares. Deerr slotted home the spot kick giving his team a 1-0 lead.
Bodles FC went close to equalising 15 minutes in the second half when the outstanding Christopher Cummings fired a torrid shot from about 30 yards out that crashed onto the crossbar and came back into play.
Deadly counterattack
Portmore, however, launched a deadly counterattack moments later and forced a corner. Wolry Wolfe slammed home a pass laid off to him from close range in the 74th minute, to give his team a 2-0 advantage.
Bodles had a last gasp effort on goal a minute from regulation time when Cummings flashed a header onto the crossbar, but it was clearly not a day for an upset and Portmore prevailed.
Coach of Bodles F.C., Calvin Valentine was somewhat disappointed with the loss.
"Today's game was marred by our inexperience," Valentine expressed, while adding that the penalty his team conceded was via a defensive blunder.
