  • Ebanks rules roost in SE 'St Bess'

    DAMION EBANKS of Chocolate Hole was the toast of the 2006 SDC/Len Blake South East St. Elizabeth cricket competition when he walked away with the most awards at the ceremony at Alpart Sports club on Thursday night.

    The batsman, formerly of St. Elizabeth Technical, pocketed $22,000 for being the top player with the bat while Lance Whyteley was the top cricketer of the season with the ball.

    Ebanks was voted the most valuable player and for scoring the most runs for which he collected $10,000. He scored a total of 314 runs, which included 160 against Ballard Valley. He also received $1,000 as the player for that round.

    Other winners

    Whyteley of Dalton Youth Club took a total of 12 wickets and collected $10,000 for his efforts. In his best innings of the season he claimed seven wickets in their match against Nain.

    Tyrone Vassell of Ballard Valley also pocketed $10,000 for scoring the most centuries - two and 319 runs, and national representative Shawn Findley of Chocolate Hole received $5,000 for taking the most catches.

    Nief Mountain were awarded the most disciplined team for which they collected $20,000 and champions Cheapside Youth Club collected $100,000 and the Len Blake Trophy.

    Guest speaker at the function, the executive director of the Local Organisation Committee (LOC)of Cricket World Cup in Jamaica, Robert Bryan, praised champions Cheapside and Lititz/Comma Pen.

    "I would like to add my voice of congratulations to Lititz/Comma Pen for winning the SDC national 20/20 championship," Bryan said.

  • Domino at Caymanas Park

    The CTL-sponsored Portmore/St. Catherine domino league takes a break tomorrow to facilitate the playing of the Jamaica Domino Federation's KO one-day competition at Caymanas Park starting at noon. The organisers say other teams apart from the 22 currently in the league can participate in tomorrow's tournament. Entries close at 10:00 a.m. and the fee is $2,000 per club. Prize money will be paid to the first and second-placed teams.

  • Three-Miles River advance to final

    Three-Miles River defeated Mount Grace 2-0 on Wednesday to secure their place in the mid-season final of the Captain's Bakery-sponsored Westmoreland Major League football competition.

    Three-Miles River moved to 10 points, four more than Petersfield and Robins' River.

    In Wednesday's other matches, Petersfield beat Russia 1-0 while Robins' River and Frome ended 1-1.

    In Zone B, Roaring River and Paul Island are fighting for the top spot.

    Roaring River are on nine points from three matches while Paul Island are on six points from three matches and both will face-off on Monday in a game which could decide the qualifier.

    In the zone's other matches on Monday, Central Community face Chantilly while Straths take on New Market at Llandilo.

  • St. Ann Major League

    Action in the Captain Bakery's-sponsored St. Ann Major League continues tomorrow with two matches.

    Parry Town face Great Pond at Drax Hall while Benfica tackle Stand Fast at Addison Park. Both matches are set to start at 3:00 p.m.

    On Monday, St. Ann Bauxite take on Golden Kickers at Discovery Bay while F.C. Ocho Rios play Volvo at Drax Hall.

    On Wednesday, Raising Star oppose Juventus at Drax Hall.

    In action earlier this week, Stand Fast defeated Parry Town 3-0 while Raising Star accounted for Great Pond by the same margin at Drax Hall. Volvo edged St. Ann Bauxite 3-2 while Lewis Strikers and Benfica ended 1-1.

  • Robinson nets hat-trick

    Dushane Robinson scored three times for Yallahs as they beat Prospect 4-1 in action from the Captain's Bakery-sponsored St. Thomas Major League on Sunday.

    Robinson scored in the seventh, 50th and 84th minutes. Fabian Richards scored Yallahs' fourth goal in the 67th minute.

    Kevin Scott netted Prospect's lone goal.

    In other matches played on the weekend, Lyssons United beat Danvers Pen 2-0, Whitehorses Upliftment defeated Leith Hall Youth Club 2-1, so too Delta Force over Real Morant while Paul Bogle stopped Kool Kat 1-0.

    On Tuesday, Yallahs, led by goals from Conroy Brooks and Jerome Jemmison, defeated Kool Kat 2-0. Real Morant beat Whitehorses Upliftment 2-0. Lenroy Laing and Denver Dyce scored for the winners.

    Action resumes this afternoon with three matches. Kool Kat meet Delta Force at York, Prospect face Leith Hall at Cotton Tree and Paul Bogle take on Real Morant at Paul Bogle High..

    In tomorrow's lone game, Danvers Pen play Whitehorses Upliftment at Danvers Pen while Yallahs tackle Lyssons United at Petersfield on Tuesday.

  • Kendal face Mandeville United

    Kendal entertain Mandeville United at Kendal playing field and Porus tackle Downs in a rescheduled game at Porus Community Centre as action continues in the Captain's Bakery Manchester Major League at 3:00 p.m. today.

    On Tuesday, Hill Star take on Mile Gully at Mile Gully Community Centre at 3:30 p.m.

    Porus defeated Harmons 2-0 on Wednesday while Hillstars edged Porus 2-1 on Tuesday.

  • Hot Shots pool tourney

    The first major pool tournament of the year takes place at Hot Shots Sports Bar, 103 Constant Spring Road, today and tomorrow, starting at 4:30 p.m. each day. It is the Hot Shots 'B' class tourney which offers a first prize of $25,000.

    The runner-up will receive $10,000 and third $5,000. Despite the absence of 'A' class players, there are so many useful players ranked lower that play should be highly competitive. They include Troy 'Jiggy' McLean, Kevin Davis, Wade Young, Mike Chin, Lincoln Clarke, Clive Grant and Dwaan Chin. Entrance fee is $1,000, re-entry fee $800.

    The tournament will feature best of five games for each set and best of seven for the semis and final.

  • 'St. Bess' football

    The St. Elizabeth Wray and Nephew Major League will get into full gear this weekend with a full slate of matches today and tomorrow.

    In today's action, Appleton will tackle Young Brazil at Appleton while Super Action host Middle Quarters at Mountainside.

    Tomorrow four games will be played across the parish.

    Black River Y.C. will host Rasta Camp in the feature game at New Town. In the other games, Haughton United will tackle STETHS at Lacovia, Holland face Balaclava at Holland and Epping Forest will entertain New River at Munro.

    The competition got underway with a dress parade, opening ceremony and a double header at the Lacovia Community Centre last Sunday.

    In the opening encounters, STETHS beat Black River 2-1 while former champion Holland PYC whipped newly-promoted Appleton, formerly Thornton YC 2-0. In two other games played on Tuesday, Middle Quarters also got their first win of the season by beating Balaclava while Super Action and Young Brazil drew 1-1.

  • Cumberland, Passagefort clash

    Portmore teams Cumberland and Passagefort will clash in the Candon-Enterprise St. Catherine Division One Football League mid-season final at the Spanish Town Prison Oval tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.

    Cumberland qualified for the mid-season final by virtue of being on top of Zone One with 18 points after eight rounds while Passagefort made it to the title match by topping Zone Two with 14 points.

    Meanwhile, in the Juiciful St. Catherine Major League mid-season final, red-hot Tru-Juice take on Bodles at 5:00 p.m. at the same venue.

    Bodles (13 points) qualified for the final after topping Zone Two over Meadows on goal difference while Tru-Juice marched to the final after leading Zone One with 20 points, one ahead of D.B. Basovak.

  • Table tennis play-offs

    The Division One play-offs in the JTTA/Northwest Development National Table Tennis Club League have been decided.

    Newcomers Iyante and Friendship will oppose each other in one semi-final while JDF will oppose JUTC in the other.

    Iyante finished in first position with 24 points followed by JUTC (23), JDF (20) and Friendship (17).
