The Jamaica Fire Brigade is again urging parents to teach their children fire prevention measures. At the same time the brigade is urging adults to install fire safety devices in their homes.
The call follows a series of fires on the weekend.
Speaking with The Gleaner on Sunday, Senior Deputy Superin-tendent at the Fire Prevention Headquarters, Samuel McIntosh, said children should be reminded of simple rules such as not to play with matches and candles.
"While we find that only a few of most fires are started by children there are some basic things that adults need to do," said Senior Deputy Superintendent McIntosh.
"Unless something happens to us personally we disregard the warnings. But we really need to be more responsible."
The fire chief said fire devices or smoke detectors may prove to be very helpful in extinguishing a fire before property is destroyed or life is lost.
On Sunday, fire of unknown origin destroyed a small board house dwelling in Lyssons, St. Thomas.
Meanwhile, there were at least two other incidents on the weekend.
WORK OF ARSONISTS
On Saturday two houses were destroyed by fire in Hanover.
The Constabulary Communi-cations Network (CCN) reported that the fire, believed to be the work of arsonists, destroyed two houses in Success district.
According to reports from the CCN's liaison officer for the parish, about 12:15 p.m., fire was seen coming from a four-room board house. It quickly spread, engulfing an adjoining six-room board house. Loss is estimated at $2 million.
The Ramble police, who are investigating, said a man was seen running from the scene after the fire started.
On Friday, fire also razed a building housing the St. Dacre's Library in St. Ann.
