Guyana grab slim lead
published: Tuesday | January 30, 2007

BERBICE (CMC):

Thirteen wickets tumbled yesterday as Guyana took a narrow eight-run first innings lead against the Leeward Islands on the second day of their fourth round Carib Beer Series match at Albion.

Resuming on their overnight 67 without loss, Guyana were dismissed an hour after lunch for 195, despite a defiant 57 from opener Sewnarine Chattergoon who stroked nine fours from 157 balls in his 237-minute innings.

Pacers Kerry Jeremy (4-48) and Lionel Baker (4-64), assisted by a track with variable bounce and poor shot selection, conspired to rout the Guyanese. Six wickets fell for 61 runs after lunch as Guyana toppled from a strong position of 134 for four, replying to the visitors' first innings total of 187.

Batting a second time, Leewards had reached 149 for three at the close with captain Sylvester Joseph leading the way with a workman-like, unbeaten 50. Joseph reached his half-century just before the close from 131 minutes, 111 balls with five fours while Omari Banks was unbeaten on 26 with three fours. The pair have so far shared a 64-run stand for the fourth wicket.
