El Commandante track renamed
published: Tuesday | January 30, 2007

The El Commandante racetrack in Puerto Rico, where Miracle Man scored that historic win in the Confraternity Classic on December 9, has changed hands and will now be known as the Hipodromo Camarero.

The change is in honour of the Puerto Rican racing legend Camarero, who won a world record 56 consecutive races in that country.

In 2003, the El Commandante racetrack filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and since then, Hipodromo Camarero has been seeking to acquire the country's lone racetrack located just outside the capital city, San Juan, in Canovanas.

The track is home to the US$300,000 Caribbean Classic (Clasico del Caribe) for three-year-olds from Central America and the Caribbean and the US$100,000 Confraternity Classic for four-year-olds and up, both run in early December.

In the past 30 years, Jamaican horses such as LEGAL LIGHT, HARLEQUIN, ROYAL DAD, INDIAN FLAME, POORLITTLERICHGIRL and of course MIRACLE MAN have represented this country in Puerto Rico.

For the first time in almost 50 years, a Puerto Rican racetrack is now owned by a Puerto Rican enterprise. Recently, a United States bankruptcy court Judge approved Hipodromo Camarero's US$73 million re-organisational plans for the track.
