Man charged with bribery
published: Wednesday | January 31, 2007

Byron McDaniel, Gleaner Writer

Walderston, Manchester:

A 21-year-old mechanic of a Mount Salem, St. James address was taken into custody by the Christiana police after he allegedly offered a policeman a bribe to amend traffic charges, on Saturday.

The mechanic was caught in a sting operation, which resulted from an incident in which he was stopped by police conducting spot checks, on January 23.

Stopped for check

According to Sergeant Rovan Salmon, of the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), Damion Douglas, of Mount Salem, in Montego Bay, was stopped by the police while driving a Toyota Corolla motor car along the Struan main road in Christiana, Manchester, last week Tuesday.

The police cited Mr. Douglas for having no driver's licence, no insurance coverage and operating without a road licence. He was ticketed by Constable Romain Brooks, of the Christiana Police.

On Saturday, Mr. Douglas contacted the prosecuting officer and offered him $6,000 if he would withdraw the ticket and charge him with a lesser offence. The policeman reported the matter to his colleagues at the station, who set up the sting operation.

Later that day, while the accused was handing over the money to the policeman, he was confronted on by the other policemen and arrested.

He is booked to appear in the Christiana Resident Magistrate's Court, on February 23.
