Jamaica dreams crushed

The victorious Barbados team leaves the Chedwin Park field yesterday after trouncing Jamaica by an innings and 31 runs on day three of their Carib Beer Series match. - Junior Dowie/Staff Photographer

JAMAICA'S DREAM of winning the regional four-day Carib Beer Cup ended like a nightmare yesterday morning at Chedwin Park when they were soundly beaten by leaders Barbados.

Resuming on 81 for five, still 85 runs in arrears, Jamaica, who started the round in second place a nine points behind Barbados, lost the match by an innings and 31 runs with well over a day to spare as the combination of pace bowlers Corey Collymore and Pedro Collins - with two and three wickets, respectively - brushed aside the last five wickets for 50 runs in 14.4 overs in exactly one hour of the third day's play.

Final scores: Jamaica 132 and 135, Barbados 298.

Bowling for Barbados, Collymore finished with four for 42 off 11.4 overs for a match haul of 10 for 72 off 30.4 overs and Collins with four for 38 off 13 overs for an overall take of six for 67 off 29 overs.

Only a draw needed

The victory left Barbados on 42 points and needing only a draw in their final match against Guyana to win the Cup.

For Jamaica, however, the defeat left them on 21 points and needing to defeat Trinidad and Tobago in their final match if they hope to finish in second spot and to contest the Challenge Trophy.

When play resumed 30 minutes earlier than usual and in bright sunshine despite a few dark clouds above, Jamaica, with David Bernard Jr. on 11, Jamie Trenchfield on six, and despite the odds against it, were praying for something like a miracle to happen, and when young Trenchfield confidently stroked Collymore off his legs to mid-wicket for three in the morning's first over, things looked promising - at least for a fight.

Instead of standing up and fighting, however, Jamaica, with the exception of Trenchfield, rushed to their death, and but for a four-over ninth-wicket partnership of 20 between Nikita Miller, 16 not out, and Andrew Richardson, 10, the match would have ended long before it finally did.

In the morning's second over, the left-handed Trenchfield, after going the same way in the first innings, after surviving a loud shout for leg before wicket the previous delivery, shuffled into his wicket against the left-handed Collins bowling over the wicket and was leg before for nine at 84 for six.

In the following over, Bernard aimed a massive drive at Collymore, edged the ball straight to Floyd Reifer at first slip and was gone at 88 for seven without adding to his overnight score

In the following over it could have been and should have been 87 for eight when Miller, on zero, drove lustily at Collins and captain Ryan Hinds at third slip floored the catch.

Odean Brown made it 103 for eight when, on 10 after smashing two boundaries, he swung outrageously at Collins and lost his middle stump.

It was 123 for nine when Richardson, after a couple of hefty strokes, swung at Collins and was leg before wicket for 10 and the end came at 10:30 when Jermaine Lawson, after a lovely drive off Collins to the long-off boundary, was beaten through the air by Collymore, stabbed at the ball, and Ryan Austin came up with a low catch at mid-on.
