Importation strategies
published: Thursday | February 1, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

While any sensible person would strongly support the National Security Minister in his announcement to deploy marine vessels at strategic points around the island to 'prevent' illegal importation, etc, it is unfortunate to read that he will be "staying the course." Come on minister, wake up .... our people are dying (too many) and the undesirables are spreading fear across the island and discouragement abroad.

You are losing the battle and in such circumstances, you should reconsider your strategies and implement changes where necessary.

You cannot carry on as if all's well. Your security agencies should be able to advise and confirm such a simple fact. Please don't simply sit and do nothing or else before long, someone will be waving the white flag.

Further points to consider in order to eradicate the current situation: How do you prevent the infiltration of criminal-minded people in the organisations whose purpose is to prevent crime and other illegal activities? Do you have vetting/security clearance procedures?

Do you have adequate supervision/management/audit procedures? For each item of illegal importation (and we are specifically dealing here with firearms) someone must be held accountable and suffer the consequences.

I am, etc.,

EARL HINES
