Elise Kelly an 'IRIE' Empress
published: Friday | February 2, 2007

Andre Jebbinson, Staff Reporter

Elise Kelly

The powerful, yet embracing voice heard on weekdays, except Fridays, on IRIE FM from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. belongs to Empress Elise Kelly. A quite distinguishable voice it is too. It is also one that captivates her listeners with whatever the topic of the day is.

How did you get started in the media?

I was in sixth form at the time when I auditioned and then invited by then JIS TV producer, Denee Campbell, to host a five-minute news programme. It was called 'Newsgramme' and was a small part of a JIS TV presentation called 'Forward Together'. The entire programme was hosted by Elaine Wint-Leslie. That was my introduction into the media.

What is your dream job?

I have one! But I could also picture myself playing major roles in entertainment, inspiring big screen movies. That pays!

What is your best moment working in the media?

The moment when this powerful medium is used to reach out and touch someone in a meaningful and lasting way. That's always a heart-warming moment.

Have you been faced with negative remarks?

Oh yes. The Almighty himself faces negative remarks and He is perfect.

If not radio, what would you be doing?

I'd still be in the media. I'd still be in the music at some level and it would still be about people.

What is your favourite local/international show?

That would have to be the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Who are your favourite media personalities? (local/international)

I admire Christiane Amanpour's hands-on approach to journalism, her bravery, diligence and credibility. Locally, my favourites are Ron Muschette, Neville Bell and Simon Crosskill. I love to laugh.

What turns you off about people?

Cowardice, filthiness and pretentiousness.

If you could meet any person, who would he/she be?

Cuban President Fidel Castro before he passes on.

What is the one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?

The side of me that enjoys frivolities such as fashion pageantry and reality TV.
