Bank on Zealot
published: Friday | February 2, 2007

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

Both the Pick-9 and Super-6 start anew at Caymanas Park tomorrow, the programme offering 10 races. Post time is noon.

After six punters shared the whopping $16.2 million Pick-9 payout last Saturday, the popular exotic bet was nabbed by a lucky punter who walked away with a cool million.

The Pick-9 commences from the second race, the Super-6 from race five.

We look at the Super-6 which gets underway with a $240,000 - $210,000 claiming race in which the down in class CORDITE will prove hard to beat.

The seven-year-old gelding, who is highly fancied to cap the 'Claimer of the Year' award at next Thursday's None Such/Horse of the Year awards dinner by virtue of seven wins last year, won easily over this trip on December 23, and was subsequently claimed by trainer Lawrence Freemantle for himself.

CORDITE then finished third to out-of-class SIR KHAN over 1600 metres on December 30, but is back to where he is comfortable for this race and should resume winning ways at the expense of MEDICAL ACCOUNT and ME LLAMO.

ZEALOT, having finished a good second to DUST ROCK over 1600 metres last Saturday, looks the one to beat when she reports for the sixth race over 1100 metres in which eight starters have been declared. None of her rivals can be said to have appealing form and ZEALOT should be used as a banker.

The well-forward debutante ROMEZ should also be used as a banker in the seventh race, the Mercury Sprint for maiden three-year-old colts and geldings over the straight five course.

Trained by Richard Azan, this attractive bay colt by Pat N Jac out of the Bold Executive mare Charmer For A Day - a full brother to Flying Tiger who once held the straight five track record - has been burning up the track at exercise and on Monday last, galloped five furlongs from the gate in an impressive 1:00.0. He should give former champion jockey Wesley Henry an arm-chair ride in the seven-strong field.

BULLET TRAIN, which was most impressive with a fast-time runaway win over the straight last Saturday, is expected to repeat against 11 overnight allowance horses in the eighth (again over the straight), a race in which KYSHA BABY, CALABASH BAY and EXPLOSIVE PEAK should ensure he is extended.

Then, take the recent winner MEDICAL REPORT to grab the St. Catherine Cup feature (ninth race) over 1100 metres at the expense of old rivals UNKNOWN VARIABLE and DIESEL, while it should be CELEBRATION TIME over NAVAJOJOE and BREAKING NEWS in the knotty 10th race over 1300 metres to be contested by the maximum 16 starters.
