Teams battle for second-round places today
published: Wednesday | February 7, 2007

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

BOLSTERED BY big wins over the weekend, National Premier League (NPL) teams Naggo Head and Seba United will look to book their places in the next round of the Red Stripe Champions Cup when they face Sporting Central Academy and Port Morant All-Stars at 3:00 p.m. today.

Naggo Head must certainly be beaming with confidence after snatching their first win of the Wray and Nephew NPL on Sunday. Now they turn their attention to getting the better of a Sporting Central team which held them to a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Cotton Tree Field in Clarendon. Hoping for a better run in the knockout competition, the St Catherine team will also be encouraged by the fact it will be hosting Sporting Central at the Ferdie Neita Sports Complex.

Seba find themselves in an even better position when they host the Port Morant All Stars at Catherine Hall. The struggling team from St. James will draw confidence from its massive victory over champions Waterhouse on Sunday and also take a 2-1 advantage into today's second-leg tie.

In other games, Duhaney Park face a stiff challenge when they travel to Trelawny where they face Holland United. Holland proved to be more than a handful when the teams met at the Sherwin Williams ground where they held the hosts scoreless and hold a slight advantage playing at home today.

Montpelier and St. Ann Bauxite will be looking to break their 1-1 first-leg tie when they face off at the Drax Hall. Star Cosmos have all but booked their place in the next round as they registered a 3-1 victory over Frome away from home last week.

If Frome are to progress they certainly have their work cut out for them. It will take nothing short of a sensational performance to overturn the deficit when they travel to Brimmer Vale today.

If any of today's second-leg games are tied after regulation time, extra time and, if necessary, penalties will then be required to see who progresses to the next round.

TODAY'S GAMES

Holland United vs. Duhaney Park at Elliston Wakeland Centre

Seba United vs. Port Morant All-Stars at Catherine Hall

St. Ann Bauxite vs. Montpelier at Drax Hall

Star Cosmos vs. Frome at Brimmer Vale

Naggo Head vs. Sporting Central Academy at Ferdie Neita Park

All games begin at 3:00 p.m.
