Enjoying a healthy lifestyle by balancing the food items we consume has always been difficult, especially for persons who enjoy fried foods.

Debate about the best oil for cooking has been long and at times, downright greasy as scientists research which form of the ingredient is healthier for human consumption.

Many believe that vegetable oils including olive oil, promote healthy living.

One form of vegetable oil that was incorrectly considered unhealthy is coconut oil.

However, coconut oil is finally finding favour among experts after its fall from grace several years ago.

Better alternative

Coconut oil is now considered a better alternative than many other oils because it contains few fats with highly perishable double bonds and has no trans-fats which can lead to clogged arteries, heart disease and diabetes.

Coconut oil contains saturated fats which are digested more easily and are sent directly to the liver where they are converted to energy and not stored as fat. This easy absorption of coconut oil stimulates the metabolic system. Thus, the body burns more calories a day and contributes to weight loss.

Additionally, virgin coconut oil contains lauric acid which is said to have antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal agents which attack viruses and help to build the immune system.

Benefits of Coconut Oil

Helps reduce weight, or maintain present ideal weight.

Reduces the risk of heart disease.

Prevents disease and routine illness with its powerful antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agents.

Increases metabolism, and promotes healthy thyroid function.

Boosts your daily energy.

Rejuvenates your skin and prevents wrinkles.

Ways to use Coconut Oil

1. In place of other oils (margarine, butter, shortening), for all cooking needs, as it is a stable cooking oil. (Of course, you should not burn any cooking oil.)

2. As an ingredient when juicing or making smoothies.

3. In salads, or even by the tablespoon.

4.As an excellent massage oil.

5.As a skin lotion for healthier, younger skin.
