Strugglers Seba, Naggo Head advance
published: Thursday | February 8, 2007

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

PREMIER LEAGUE strugglers Seba United and Naggo Head advanced to the next round of the All-Island Red Stripe Champions Cup in contrasting styles yesterday.

MoBay-based Seba trounced Port Morant All-Stars of St. Thomas 9-1 for an 11-2 aggregate win, while Naggo Head battled to a 0-0 draw with Sporting Central, advancing on the away-goal rule after a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

In yesterday's other games, Duhaney Park edged Trelawny's Holland United 1-0 at the Elliston Wakeland Centre to advanced 1-0 on aggregate; Montpelier of Hanover thrashed St. Ann Bauxite 5-0 for a 6-1 aggregate win, while St. Mary's Star Cosmos advanced 5-3 after playing to a 2-2 with Frome of Westmoreland.

At the Ferdie Neita Park, home team Naggo Head, fresh from their first win in the Premier League - 1-0 over Village - were expected to put away Super League team Sporting Central but struggled throughout.

Tough defence

André Clennon, the Most Valuable Player in the Manning Cup, captain Patrick Edmondson, Mark Newsome, Eltham schoolboy Dwayne Hunter, Kemoy Reid and Layton Barrett dominated, but could not penetrate the Clarendon team's defence.

The St. Catherine team had a couple of close shaves but Newsome, Hunter and the tall Jermaine Clarke were denied over and over by some bold goalkeeping from Sporting Central's Wado Ricketts.

Naggo Head coach Wayne Fair-clough said his team knew it had to win and keep the momentum going.

"We played in spurts and our forwards were lacking in their finishing, but we showed why we are in the premier league," Fairclough said.

Meanwhile, Sporting Central's coach, Chris Dawes, said his team threw away the clash from the first leg.

"We should have won the first leg by two or three goals and ... we knew it would be hard in their backyard.

"They were coming off their first win in the Premier League and were motivated but it's all part of the game," said Dawes, who also plays for Portmore United in the Premier League.
