The Editor, Sir:
On Tuesday, the People's National Party (PNP) candidate for Eastern St. Andrew, Professor Trevor Munroe, had a grand tour of a section of the Standpipe gully with an entourage of ministers, his party officers and very importantly, the TV cameras. This section of the waterway had old fridges, bed frames and large pieces of refuse left there very recently by persons lacking civic pride or just downright nasty. It was only over the Christmas that the Member of Parliament, Dr. St. Aubyn Bartlett, cleaned it and a week later, it was washed again by a big shower of rain.
Disappointed
I was very disappointed that Prof. Munroe did not visit the section immediately behind the Village Plaza where his trip would have been more meaningful. I imagined that the stench might have been too much for him and his team. However, if he is serious about hygiene and health hazards and wants to really see the blatant nastiness inflicted in this commercial complex, he could write yet another book.
I consider this move by Munroe to be another piece of cheap politics. These practices were common in the 1970s and as the electorate becomes more sophisticated, politicians must find fresh and more relevant ways of campaigning. I guess a leopard never changes its spots.
I am, etc.,
