  • Bethlehem lift Inter-Collegiate crown

    MALVERN, St. Elizabeth:

    BETHLEHEM MORAVIAN College in St. Elizabeth were crowned Inter-Collegiate Division Two cricket champions last Thursday after they defeated College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) at Munro College in Malvern.

    After being put in to bat, Bethlehem were bowled out for 130. Gregory Bent, Bethlehem's captain, made 29, Marvin Foxton made 22 and Benton Denham also made 22.

    The pick of the bowlers for CASE was Davian Hyatt who took three wickets and Mario Smith who grabbed two. In reply to Bethlehem's score, CASE got off to a pretty good start with Dwayne Jackson and Dwight Forrester putting on 27 runs for the first wicket. The second wicket fell at 36, the fourth at 43 and from there it was downhill for the men from the Portland college. Wickets then fell at 59, 60, 61, 70, 82 and 88 - for which they finally dismissed. The pick of the bowlers for Bethlehem were Bent, who took four wickets for 27 runs, and Denham who claimed three for 35.

    The top scorer for CASE was Mario Smith who made 16.

    Bethlehem's win has placed them in the Champion of Champions final between the Division One champions from the group which includes teams such as the University of the West Indies, University of Technology, Brown's Town Community College, G.C. Foster College, Excelsior Community College and The Mico University College.

    The Division One winner is yet to be decided as matches have not been completed.

  • Under-15s on show in St Ann

    St. Ann Jamaica Bauxite (Kaiser) has sponsored the Jamaica National Under-15 cricket camp which continues this weekend.

    The Under-15 team will play against a Select XI at Content Gardens today before taking part in a training session at the same venue tomorrow.

    This camp is one in a series geared towards preparation for the upcoming West Indies Regional Clico Under-15 competition to be held in Trinidad and Tobago in April. Jamaica are the defending champions.

    The selected players are Jermaine Blackwood, Hanchard Hamilton, John Campbell, Johnoy Spence, Damar Davis (Holmwood Technical), Donavan Nelson, Paul Palmer, Sheldon Samuels, Dameon Reid (St. Elizabeth Technical), Peat Salmon, Mickel Francis (Old Harbour High), Vaneil Bromfield, Nickolson Gordon (New Hope All-Age), Rajiv Service (William Knibb Memorial High), Tieno Osbourne (Garvey Maceo), Coi Thompson (St. Catherine High), Delbert Gayle (Wolmer's Boys), Jonathan Solomon (Manchester High).

  • Angels, Pacers in showdown

    Defending champions Angels 'A' will try to match strides with the youthful Pacers Juveniles in the final of the St. James Goodwill netball competition at Montego Bay Boys' Club tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.Captain Bridgette Brown, Doneshia Love and Dian Johnson will lead Angels 'A' while Pacers' attack will be led by their captain, Aleisha Anderson, national Under-16 representative Daniele Ellis and Jodian Grant. In the curtain-raiser, Kings will take on Blazers B for third.

  • Westmoreland limited overs cricket

    The big guns in the 2007 Sugar Company of Jamaica (SCJ)/Westmoreland limited overs cricket competition marched into the semi-finals after recording convincing victories last Sunday.

    Defending champions Masemure defeated newcomers Big Bridge, Frome blasted Blue Castle, Paradise crushed Belle Isle and last year's runners-up Retreat arrested the advance of Police - the other newcomers.

    Masemure made 194 in 35 overs with Damion Davidson, 38, Omar Campbell, 37, leading way against Adrian Thompson and Jomo Thompson who picked up two wickets each.

    In reply, Big Bridge were blown away for 89 in 27.2 overs. National player Andrew Richardson and Clive Thomas bagged three wickets each.

    Elsewhere, Frome scored 243 all out in 34.4 overs with Kadian McKenzie getting 109 against Lloyd Murray who took three wickets.

    In another match, Police first made 124 in 30.3 overs, to which Retreat replied with 125-6 in 24.3 overs. Derval Green scored a masterful 110 in Paradise's 267 as they defeated Belle Isle by a massive 130 runs.

    The semi-finals will be hotly contested next Sunday at Little London High School and Allan Rae Oval.

  • INSPORTS primary schools' netball

    In the lastest round of matches from the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) sponsored Kingston and St. Andrew Primary Schools Netball League, defending champions August Town beat St. Andrew 11-7 at the at the Leila Robinson Courts. The win put the champions at the top of Zone One with 18 points from six consecutive wins while St. Andrew remained on 15 points from six outings. Both teams have qualified for the quarter-finals.

    Meanwhile, Open Rally champions Clan Carthy chalked up their sixth straight win with a 24-0 whipping of Pembroke Hall. The win put them on 18 points from six games to be sole leaders of Zone Four and in the process they also have qualified for the quarter-finals.

    Former champions Mona raced to a 37-3 win over New Providence for their sixth consecutive win in Zone Two, which took them to 18 points and a berth in the quarters.

    Hope Valley Experimental whipped Alpha 26-0 after leading 13-0 at half-time.

    The competition continues on Wednesday.

  • Portland Under-16 football triple

    Three games will be played today in the Caribbean International Network/Portland Under-16 football competition at Lynch Park today.

    Snow Hill tackle Manchioneal at 11:00 a.m., St. George's oppose Progressive at 1:00 p.m. and Norwich face Ujama at 3:00 p.m.

    Taurus United lead the points standing with 14, followed by Eagle Strikers (13), Snow Hill (13), Manchioneal (12), St. George's (10), Progressive (nine) and Breastworks (six).

    In last week's round of matches, Taurus United thrashed Breastworks 6-0, Progressive defeated Norwich 4-0, Manchioneal edged Jones Park 1-0 and Eagle Strikers and Snow Hill played to a0-0 draw.
