Samad stars for Canada
published: Tuesday | February 27, 2007

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua (CMC):

Abdool Samad hit his second consecutive half-century on Caribbean soil as Canada, playing good all-round cricket, recorded a three-wicket win over Bermuda in the second One-Day International of the ICC Tri-Series tournament yesterday.

The 27-year-old right-hander cracked 83 from 86 balls as Canada, responding to Bermuda's 206 for eight of 50 overs, amassed 207 for seven with six overs remaining, at the Antigua Recreation Ground.

It was Bermuda's third successive defeat since arriving in the Caribbean.

Samad, who took 64 off Antigua in a warm-up match on Saturday, stroked nine fours and a six, but fell short of what would have been a deserved century. He added 82 for the third wicket with Ian Billcliff who narrowly missed out on a half-century with 48 from 65 balls. He struck four fours and a six.

Ashish Mulla chipped in with 31 from 41 balls down the order as Bermuda's bowlers failed to make any significant impact.

Leading wicket taker

Off-spinner Delyone Borden was the leading wicket taker, finishing with four for 30 off nine overs.

Earlier, Bermuda had reached their total, thanks to Lionel Cann who hit 42 off 25 balls with five towering sixes. Saleem Mukuddem hit 30 and Kevin Hurdle clobbered 23 with three sixes but Bermuda's batting never really clicked. Left-arm seamer, Umar Bhatti took four for 45.

Canada will play Bangladesh in the final match of theseries today.
