Spring break story no surprise
published: Tuesday | February 27, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I'm not really surprised to find out that there is a decline in spring breakers coming to Jamaica. Maybe this is a wake-up call to the leaders of the country and the tourism industry. Maybe this and further decline in tourism will finally let the leaders of Jamaica realise that crime, corruption, deseases, loose beggars, and all types of other negatives.

The leaders of Jamaica need to realise that some people used to come to Jamaica because of the English language but now other tourist destinations are teaching the English language during early education: Jamaica will end up getting a smaller percentage of the English-speaking tourist market.

What is really going to put a dent in Jamaica's tourism sector is the bad things that might happen during Cricket World Cup. Remember Jamaica will be viewed by cricket lovers all over the world. One thing that I realised during my last visit to Jamaica is that education is highly needed. Ignorance is one of the key factors in the escalating crime, violence and prostitution levels in the island. I really wouldn't recommend anyone to visit Jamaica, as I wouldn't want to have to worry about the person's safety.

Furthermore, it seems to be only a percentage of Jamaicans truly benefiting substantially from tourism. I would feel much better if the tourism industry would help to fund education within the island then we all would truly see benefits from tourism flowing within Jamaica. Peace and blessings.

I am, etc.,
