Boxers off to Bahamas
published: Tuesday | February 27, 2007

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

Four Jamaican boxers departed the island yesterday en route to The Bahamas for Thursday night's First Class Promotions Boxing card.

Boxers Anthony Osbourne, Ricardo Planter, Clifton Lewis and Patrick Taylor will take part in four bouts against Bahamian opponents at the Kendal Isaacs Gym.

Willy Yap, manager of the boxers, told The Gleaner his fighters are raring to go in what is their second trip to The Bahamas.

Jamaica's super-middleweight champion Osbourne will match skills with Bahamian super-middleweight boxer Elkeaner Saunders in the feature bout.

Saunders, a former Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association (CABA) gold medallist, has a ring record of five wins, three knockouts, against one loss and one draw.

Saunders suffered his only career loss in June last year to Puerto Rican Jean Carlos Lamberti in Miami, just six weeks after he fought at home - in New Providence - to a draw with Jamaican Ricardo Planter.

He was hoping to fight Jermaine Mackey, the Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) super-middleweight champion, but the bout fell through so he turned to Osbourne.

In the other bouts on the card, lightweight Damian Tinker facesJamaican Clifton Lewis, light heavyweight Ryan McKenzie tackle Jamaican Patrick Taylor, and Anthony Dummett meets Ricardo Bethel in a middleweight bout and Anthony Woods and Hensley Strachan will meet in a light-welterweight bout.
