Late planning for CWC
published: Thursday | March 1, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am astounded to see the work just being undertaken in preparation for the Cricket World Cup, which starts in two weeks time (March 11, to be exact). One would have thought that road works, pavement patching and beautification would have been implemented with care and enough time for the necessary monitoring and inspections to be adequately undertaken. Instead, I am shocked to see what is going on in some parts of the Corporate Area, and indeed also other parts of the island.

On the Mount Diablo road, in several places the road is being widened or straightened - a very technical job - which usually takes months to be completed. Also, the road from Sangster International Airport to the multi-purpose stadium is still in a, by and large, deplorable state.

A trip along Knutsford Boulevard today, revealed all manner of heavy equipment, loads of material, and garbage along the road while workmen worked assiduously to repave the sidewalks. I cannot imagine that any plants put in for the purpose of beautification will survive this hot and dry weather. It is beyond understanding to imagine why these jobs have been left until so late.

I am, etc.,
