Berbick suspects still in custody
published: Thursday | March 1, 2007

Gareth Davis, Gleaner Writer

Up to yesterday afternoon, the two male suspects charged with the brutal murder of former World Boxing Council heavyweight champion, Trevor Berbick, remained behind bars despite being offered bail.

The two suspects, 20-year-old Harold Berbick, nephew to the murdered boxer, and 18-year-old Kenton Gordon, both of Norwich district in Portland, were, on Tuesday, offered bail in the sum of $1 million each, with certain conditions.

Report to station

Constabulary Communication Network liaison officer for the parish, Corporal Dwane Campbell, said both suspects are to report to the Port Antonio station twice daily and are to surrender all travel documents.

"They were instructed not to interfere with any of the witnesses," said Corporal Campbell. "Berbick, nephew of the deceased, was also instructed to be present at home between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. They are presently in custody, as no one has come forward to stand surety for them."

Both suspects have been in custody since October 30, just two days after the former boxer's body was found near his home at Norwich in the parish, with four chop wounds to the back of the head. A Jamaican $100 note was also found beside him.

They are booked to reappear in the Buff Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on April 10, when preliminary inquires into the murder, which has been delayed on four occasions due to the absence of either one or both attorneys, is scheduled to begin. Berbick is represented by attorney Carl McDonald, while Gordon is represented by a legal aid lawyer.
