PAC sets Sandals Whitehouse deadline
published: Thursday | March 1, 2007

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, examining the US$43 million cost overrun at the Sandals WhitehouseHotel in Westmoreland, has set a March 20 deadline for concluding its deliberations on the controversial project.

After six months of intense debate the committee has decided to wrap up its discussions on the cost overrun between March 13 and March 20.

Interim committee chairman, Mike Henry, told members of the PAC on Tuesday that the investigation would be completed before Parliament prorogues on March 24, in preparation for the ceremonial opening of Parliament, signalling the beginning of a new fiscal and parliamentary year.

Inside the meeting

At the meeting on Tuesday the committee agreed that some of the major players in the multimillion- dollar project, including Gorstew, representatives from Ashtrom, and the Urban Development Corporation, are scheduled to appear before the committee.

Meanwhile, a draft report on the results of the probe conducted by the PAC has been prepared and submitted to committee members by Auditor General Adrian Strachan.

However, he told PAC members that the document would not be made public at this time, until the other players in the project make their input.
