Soberam's hower
published: Sunday | March 4, 2007

Janet Silvera, Senior Gleaner Writer

Odette Soberam (seated) checks out the many 'interesting' gifts bestowed upon her by her friends, and she gets help doing so from the women in charge, Cheryl Atkinson (right) and Andrea Lyle (behind chair).

WESTERN BUREAU:

Rippling muscles clearly defined under an airline captain's uniform, ultimately revealing a sculptured, chiselled and toned body, was one of the many gifts Odette Soberam received two days before her signature changed to Mrs. Godfrey Dyer.

The surprise gift, who calls himself 'Chris', appeared dancing to Buju Banton's Driver, making an instant hit with the 20 married and single women who turned out to express love, affection and happiness for the former Air Jamaica purser who has soared to new heights.

A 'bridal shower' was how Soberam's friend, Metty Scarlett Jones, tagged the excitingly titillating and mind-blowing evening at The Event Place, Montego Bay, on Thursday night.

Choreographed by 'Master of the Game' event coordinator par excellence, Weston Haughton, the then bride-to-be arrived at the venue and was met by hostesses dressed in Indian, African and European costumes.

On a journey

Soberam was taken on a journey reminiscent of the pathway where her life started in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, on March 7, 1966 - this was creatively presented as 'Ready for the World Gateway'.

Her first stop over was 'Taking the Basics' at St. John's Primary, before making a second connection to 'Higher Level' at the St. Catherine High. From there the new Mrs. Godfrey Dyer was 'Intransit' until the time came for 'Busting Out' when she won the Miss Black River Beauty Pageant.

Grounded at customs at Newport West, McIntosh Memorial Primary and International Travel Services for a combined period of years, destiny played its hand as she made her way in-flight, taking off with the 'Lovebird Air Jamaica'.

Soberam who tied the knot yesterday at the Grand Lido Negril, said her 'final destination' was is the arms of her new husband, Godfrey Dyer, where she will be 'soaring to ne>Dyer, one of Montego Bay's most beloved businessmen, who was naturally not present at the all-female bridal shower, said Soberam's charm and easy-going attitude were what attracted her to him.

The very intimate grouping included wannabe photographer Cheryl Atkinson, singer Andrea Lyle, the fabulous Joan Lee, Lee-Anne Gourzong, Nicollette Mudie, Bernadette Barnes, Debbie Forbes Davy, Lyn Holloway, Joyce McKenzie, Superintendent Jasmin Tomlinson Brown and Marrian Edwards.
