'Sunshine' beams on radio
published: Friday | March 9, 2007

DJ Sunshine spins at the Supreme Ventures Negril Carnival at Jungle Nightclub. - Herbert McKennis/Freelance Photographer

Andre Jebbinson, Staff Reporter

DJ Sunshine is a trained architect, but she says music still lingered in her head while she was in college. Her real name is Katrina Irons and, like the hurricane that created havoc in the Gulf in 2005, DJ Sunshine keeps spinning up a storm on the dance floor. Fans can catch her in The Jam on IRIE FM on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 2:00 p.m.

The Gleaner (G): How did you get started in the media?

DJSunshine (S): Bryan Schmidt saw me spinning at Harry's Bar, now Weekenz, and he asked me to come to IRIE FM. I was introduced to Mr. Young and he offered me a job. I accepted.

G: What is your dream job?

S: This is my dream job. I actually went to school, studied architecture, got the piece of paper and I ended up here.

G: What is your best moment working in the media?

S: I can't actually pinpoint one particular moment. Overall, it's great that people appreciate what I do.

G: Have you been faced with negative remarks?

S: Yeah. That's a normal thing with any other job. Especially with mine, because it's a man's world. You just have to take it as a learning experience and move on.

G: If not radio, what would you be doing?

S: Architecture.

G: What is your favourite show, local or international?

S: I am awful when it comes on to TV. I usually just switch the channels. I am now getting hooked on AFV (America's Funniest Videos) and I watch reality shows.

G: Who are your favourite media personalities, local or international?

S: That's difficult, because everyone brings their own special thing to the table. I just respect what they do.

G: What turns you off about people?

S: (She laughs). A whole lot of things. When people are hypocritical. I don't like that.

G: If you could meet any one person, who would he/she be?

S: I don't want to meet anyone and I will tell you why. Before I came into the industry, there were a lot of people I admired and when I came on the scene and met them, that totally changed.

G: What is one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?

S: I am actually a homebody.
