The Editor, Sir:As our general election approaches, the issue of campaign financing should once again be brought to the fore, particularly in light of recent developments and revelations regarding Trafigura's so-called 'gift' to the People's National Party.
The need to enact regulations to address the issue is of critical importance to ensure in some substantive way sanctity and trust in the political process. We need to feel sure that the party which is elected will not be obligated to any big business, but will instead be made more accountable to the Jamaican people. The integrity of the process hangs in the balance, and, therefore, it is imperative that there should be urgency to implement and enact meaningful and effective legislation that will oversee the process.
Perhaps implementing a cap on contributions from private entities, if we desire to go that route, along with some contribution from statefunds, could be looked at. But whatever the solution or approach, it is imperative that it be implemented expeditiously.
It is time we take a proactive, and not a reactive, stance in addressing concerns relating to campaign financing. Let us as citizens renew the call for a purified political process that we can feel comfortable and proud and also be assured that our elected officials will be representing our interest and not that of any large conglomerate.
