Tivoli topple league leaders Harbour View
published: Friday | March 9, 2007

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Tivoli Gardens took charge of things when they thrashed Premier League leaders Harbour View 3-0 in Red Stripe Champions Cup action on Wednesday night at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium. The huge win away from home sees the west Kingston team very comfortably placed ahead of next Wednesday's fixture.

After a scoreless first half, Tivoli Gardens' left back Christopher Jackson blasted the title holder's into the lead in the 52nd minute. Tivoli captain Fabian Davis dug the home team into an even deeper hole with a well-taken free kick to score his third goal in as many games in the 72nd minute.

Bad to worse

Things went from bad to worse for the 2004 beaten finalists when central midfielder Richard Edwards was ejected from the game a minute after that goal. Edwards had also been unable to take part in the second end of round, match which Harbour View lost 1-0 to Reno last Sunday, following an accumulation of yellow cards.

Tivoli striker Roland Dean added insult to injury for Harbour View when he found the back of the net three minutes from full-time.

Celebrating 33 years in style

HARBOUR VIEW celebrated their 33rd anniversary in exquisite style by welcoming two new sponsors, Lucozade and the St Thomas Credit Union, on board at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium on Wednesday.

Combined, the two will pump $1.6 million into the club's development over the next year. Lucozade, who were partially involved with the club last season, will contribute $550,000, while first-time sponsors St. Thomas Credit Union will pour $1.05 million into the organisation's coffers.

For Harbour View club chairman Carvel Stewart, things have certainly come a long way since the team's founding members collected and sold bottles to fund their early ventures.

"In the early days we used to depend solely on charity but things are a bit different now as we can convince institutions that there can be a benefit to both parties," Stewart said.

"I remember when we used to go around the communities and collect bottles and this would be enough to get gear for the team. The value of bottles has obviously decreased significantly since then, so we are glad to have our sponsors on board," he quipped.
