Cricket World Cup is here!
published: Saturday | March 10, 2007

The lovely game of cricket has invaded our lives. Even those who are not 'into' the sport have been inundated as friends and relatives abroad call home for updates on the staging of the event in the Caribbean region.

Well, what to do when something is unavoidable? Become a 'wagonist'! Get on the bandwagon this weekend as almost, if not all, events are cricket themed. The big event, however, will be the opening ceremony and Brand Trelawny happening in the parish.

From 10:00 a.m. today and tomorrow, Falmouth, the parish capital will be abuzz. Throughout the town, several booths displaying craft and food items will be on display. A mini-parade and a 'One Love Concert' is also planned for Saturday. The free concert will feature Lucky Dube, Third World, Richie Stephens and many others.

On Sunday, persons may view a live feed of the ICC Official Opening Ceremony from within the capital.

Still, not everyone will be able to fit into Falmouth for the big jamboree.

Hence, here's what to do so that you and your family can still have a grand time :

What you should do

  • Today, take your family to see the National Pantomime, Howzzat! at the Little Theatre on Tom Redcam Avenue. in St. Andrew. The play, centred around the game of cricket, bowls off at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Your family will be able to become familiar with some of the sport's terms before the competition officially begins on Tuesday.

  • Connect your television to your component set so your living room is filled with a surround sound of the telecast.

  • Purchase a bat and ball and have them displayed in your sitting room. This will bring the flavour of the game inside your home. Your children, if they did not before, will know what a cricket ball looks like.
