'Corruption rife in the St Catherine Parish Council'
published: Saturday | March 10, 2007

Notice ... Claims funds being misappropriated. - File

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

Councillor for the Bog Walk division, Dr. Raymoth Notice, is claiming that corruption is rife within the St. Catherine Parish Council where millions of dollars destined for the Social Economic Support Programme fund have been used for personal and political gain.

Dr. Notice, who was addressing the general council meeting Thursday, said he was in possession of the title for a piece of land, that was allegedly purchased with funds from the council, which had been allotted to a councillor for carrying out of road work.

"We have people even buying land out of the council's money and it must be investigated, as I have the document here," he told fellow councillors during the meeting.

Councillors receiving funds

The former Spanish Town mayor told The Gleaner shortly after the meeting that, despite the constant complaints of a lack of money in the St. Catherine Parish Council, there were a number of councillors who were constantly receiving funds for use in their divisions. This, he said, needed to be checked out.

He added that, if the funds were not being spent in the desired way, then someone should be held accountable.
