Rehab centre for deportees
published: Monday | March 12, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AGREE with Prime Minister Portia Simpson. I have been saying for such a long time that Jamaica has enough land for a rehabilitation centre. Indeed, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom should help with these people and, of course, those who can be rehabilitated should be given the privilege to do so since everyone deserves a second chance.

However, there should be a one strike and you are back in the slammer. These deportees should be made to do farming while they are locked away, and the chain gang policy should be implemented.

Also, give them a small salary which should be kept in an account until they are ready for release. Moreover, the ones who have no relatives living in the country should remain in the facility until they have enough money in their account to enter the society. Still, let me add that a housing project should be built for those who have no relatives living in the country. This way, they will have a place to call home when they are ready for society.

I am, etc.,
