UWI top Inter-Col cricket
published: Tuesday | March 13, 2007

The University of the West Indies (UWI) were crowned champions in the Jamaica Inter-Collegiate Sports Association cricket competition when they whipped Bethlehem Moravian College of St. Elizabeth by eight wickets at the University of Technology field, last Saturday.

It was Bethlehem's first loss this season. Sent to bat after losing the toss the men from Malvern were unable to cope with some very good bowling from the UWI and were only able to score 103 from 26 of their allotted 40 overs.

The top batsman for Bethlehem was Marvin Foxton, who, while watching the wickets of his teammates tumble rapidly, made a well played 43, including six boundaries and two towering sixes.

Good bowling

Jerome Williams two for 14, Richard Johnson two for 20, Simon Jackson two for 10 and Alrick Campbell also two for 10 put in a good bowling performance while ensuring that the boys from Malvern made just over 100.

UWI made a blistering start as captain Simon Jackson and Crafton Clarke posted 41 before Bethlehem claimed their first scalp. The man out was Jackson, who made 14, including three fours.

Chadwick Walton joined Clarke and they took the UWI score to 53 before Clarke got a good delivery from Brenton Dinham which knocked out his middle stump. Clarke scored 23 including four boundaries. Tariq White then joined Walton at the crease and the two were able to take their team to an eight-wicket victory with 30 of their 40 overs to spare. Bethlehem's captain Gregory Bent and Dinham took one wicket each.

The victory by the UWI was their sixth straight in the competition, having cleaned up Division one while defeating the G.C. Foster College, University of Technology, Mico College, Browns Town Community College and Excelsior Community.

Bethlehem on the other hand reached the final after they beat Knox Community College, Church Teachers College, College of Agriculture, Science and Education and Moneague College.
