Spectacular curtain-raiser
published: Thursday | March 15, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Congratulations to Jamaica on what appears to have been an almost flawless opening ceremony on Sunday! For many in Trinidad & Tobago (T&T), we are thoroughly proud to host this international sporting event with our Caribbean brothers and sisters, and we have got off on the right foot with what has been described as nothing less than a spectacular curtain-raiser.

Ever the critics, there are some dissenting voices here at home who believe that Sunday's programme placed too much emphasis on Jamaican culture, particularly the singers. Trinbagonians are famously over-critical so 'doh mind dat.' They probably just green with envy that Jamaica got the opportunity to host the opening and did such a fantastic job. After the debacle that was Carifesta, no one would soon look to T&T as a cultural event mecca.

So congrats again, Jamaica ... let's hope our team follows suit against Zimbabwe and Canada, makes it to the next round and makes a clean sweep of it in the finals against South Africa! Yes, I believe we will be the first team to win the World Cup at home. It's far-fetched but sport is all about the dream realised.

I am, etc.,
