Pakistani supporters grace Sabina Park
published: Thursday | March 15, 2007

Left: Who cares about cricket when you have better things to watch? Right: A bunch of excited fans. - photos by Norman Grindley/Deputy Chief Photographer

They attracted the attention of nearly everyone in the stands as soon as they walked in. The women, three of them in all, were covered from head to toe in the finest silk you've ever seen. The lone male, dressed in white, put a bag on a chair and walked closer to the fence.

"Pakistan, Inzamam! Pakistan, Inzamam!" he shouted in a raspy voice while waving his fist in the air. More people turned to look at him and this only served as encouragement. The man moved quickly to his bag when he realised that he was being watched and whipped out a sign and held it up. He made a slow 360-degree turn so that everyone could see it.

This fellow attracted a lot of attention at the match on Tuesday.

'Allah Bless Pakistan' was written on the sign and the man holding it started to shout to different Pakistani players on the field and wave to them.

None of them waved back but even that didn't seem to dampen his spirit any. Whenever his team did something that he liked, he would shout loudly and jump up and down on one leg, his face as bright as a child's on Christmas morning.

This was just one of the outstanding scenes at Tuesday's opening game of the Cricket World Cup at Sabina Park in Kingston. While people flew in from all over the world to see what was happening on field, it was the action in the stands that really took the cake.

This week, I'll let you just have a look at some of the scenes off the pitch. If you weren't able to make it then these pictures will make you feel as if you were there. Enjoy!

Left: Even if you're not really into cricket, there are still other reasons to go see a match at Sabina Park. Right: Watching the ball go over the fence for six.
