First female bus driver
published: Friday | March 16, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I was overcome with emotion and nostalgia as I read the story on Dorothy Ebanks, Jamaica's first female bus driver. I was one of the many schoolchildren who waited for her bus to come, so we could watch her drive just like any man out there. When she drove number 19 (Trench Town) we stood by the bus stops and just looked at her; she was such a sensation that she became a national celebrity.

Now, many years later, her early achievement was highlighted to me when I saw an article in the Chicago Sun Times, chronicling the life of the first female bus driver of the Chicago Transit Authority. This lady started in 1974, a few years after our Dorothy. It occurred to me that as children, wedid not realise that we were witnessing history in the making. I would like to say to her, "Nuff respect, Dorothy", and thanks for the memories.

I am, etc.,
