Reparation a 'waste of time'
published: Friday | March 16, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am leaning toward the view that seeking reparations for slavery is a waste of time. The ex-masters don't have that kind of money, and if they did, they are not going to give it (they control the world). One of my brethren said what we should really be doing is tackling racism, which is very stink around the world (even I have experienced it in my travels).

He lauded South Africa for how they dealt with apartheid when it ended - truth and reconciliation commission, etc. Even now, how the process is continuing is applaudable. Nelson Mandela is the real big man of this world. We don't even recognise him really for who he is. He could have ranted and raged, but he chose to be like Jesus.

I would sacrifice a million pounds if I was treated equally. Racism makes me angry. I don't like to be angry. Yes, politicians are our new masters. Again, controls should be put in place so they don't continue to whip us.

I am, etc.,

ANDREW VANRIEL
