Issue:Violent lyrics inciting the young
published: Saturday | March 17, 2007

The reverberation stemming from the continuous conflicts between deejays have impacted negatively on the most vulnerable among us - our young people. The impasse between Vybz Kartel and Movado has been the most recent of such conflicts. This war of words has inadvertently spilled over into school life, affecting all age-group cohorts. The impressionable minds of my young charges went into a frenzy recently, tossing words back and forth defending their favourite of the two adversaries who continued to engage in vitriolic lyrical battle.

Many of these students have even resorted to quoting some of these negative and abusive lyrics whenever they are engaged in verbal confrontations among themselves. Gone are the days when verbal arguments would consist of phrases such as "Get lost" , "Cut eye cut eye caan cut me in two" or "Shu, no badda me".

There are female deejays who are also contributing to the moral decay. They, some of whom are mothers and "big" sisters, are not inculcating positive values in our children, especially our girls, but are inciting them to be antagonistic towards each other.

Deejays, you have the power to positively influence and motivate these young minds. Let your lyrics be powerful with encouragement, strong with sound advice and sweet with positive vibes. Special kudos to deejays and singers such as Luciano and Etana to name a few, who, through positive lyrics, continue to motivate and encourage the young.
