
Marlon Samuels in full flight against Pakistan on Tuesday at Sabina Park. - Dellmar WEST INDIES' middle-order batsman Marlon Samuels shone in his team?s impressive victory over Pakistan in the World Cup opener on Tuesday.
Samuels scored 63 as West Indies recovered from a slow start to post a competitive 241 for nine off their allotted 50 overs.
The former West Indies youth player took the attack to Pakistan and was well supported by captain Brian Lara before both fell to off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez (2-39).
Samuels was most brutal on Rao Iftikhar, who is known for his tight line, hitting the pacer for a majestic straight six followed by a crashing four through extra cover in the 28th over.
Samuels produced some fine strokeplay, bringing up his 50 off 56 balls with a straight six off Shoaib Malik.
His fourth-wicket partnership with Lara produced 91 runs.
Lara was full of praise for the young Jamaican after the match.

The young players showed great spirit. Marlon had a real go and got us to four an over. Then we bowled well, it was a real team effort,? said Lara.
