Members of Retreat team celebrate with their trophy after winning the Westmoreland cricket league final recently. - Contributed RETREAT ARE the new champions of the Sugar Company of Jamaica (SCJ) limited-overs cricket competition after defeating Paradise by nine wickets in last Sunday?s final played at Belle Isle community in Grange Hill, Westmoreland.
In the match, which was reduced to 37 overs, Paradise, electing to bat after winning the toss, were dismissed for 135 in 34.3 overs.
In Paradise?s innings, Nickoy Samuels top-scored with 76 not out, for which he was voted man of the match.
Samuels walked away with $22,500 for his efforts ? most overall runs ? $2500, man of the match ? $10,000 and man of the series ? $10,000 and a cricket bat.
Paradise won $30,000 for being the runners-up while Retreat?s Sean Banton, who picked up four wickets in the match, ended with most wickets in the competition ? 13 overall. He received $2,500.
In reply, Retreat were set a revised target of 130 in 34 overs, which they achieved with 5.3 overs to spare to collect $60,000. Andr? Andrews led the way with 69 not out.
Other prizes in the competition included: player with the highest total in a single match ? Derval Green of Paradise ? 110 runs ? $5,000; player with the most wickets in a single game ? Lance Scarlett of Frome ? six wickets ? $5,000; Man of the match ? semi-final one ? Ewan Andrews (46 runs) of Retreat ? $5,000; and man of the match ? semi-final two ? Michael Soloman (74 runs) of Frome ? $5,000.
